Tuesdays Truth

I like to think that we don't live in a world where evil runs rampant. Where, although we're not in the day and age of letting our kids play in the neighborhood unchaperoned after it gets dark, like we did when I was a kid, my daughter, and soon to be born second daughter, can still play outside, free from the burdens of the world. Free from having to worry about life's sometimes small {or large} inconveniences.

I like to think that good always triumphs over evil. We have constant battles going on worldwide. We have small wars and big wars over here and way over there. There are bad things that are going to happen to good people. It's a hard fact of life to learn.

But, in every bad situation, there comes a story of heroism. You'll hear of a brave passerby who, while living their own story and going about the path G-d has set for them, saw someone in distress and changed their impact on fellow humanity in a split second.

You will hear of the person who tunneled innocent slaves to slave-free territory. Of a family who hid innocent religious refugees because, what wrong did they do? None.

Stories will appear of a teacher who lied about the whereabouts of her students, protecting the young and innocent and giving her life instead.

Another story will pop up about people who, after reaching their oh-so-hard goal of running 26.1 miles, crossing a finish line that declares them winners for even attempting such a feat, running straight to the hospital to donate blood to fellow man in need.

I posted this tweet yesterday morning and how eerily true it rings today.

Have you done your part lately, yesterday, today, to make this world a better place? We all want to leave our mark on this world. Make sure yours is a positive one.

And your story? It doesn't have to be known about worldwide. Your imprint on this beautiful world we live in need not be published or documented into the annals of history.

But rather, making a difference, a positive, loving and effective difference, known to just one other person, or even better, just yourself? Is the true definition of being a good person. It's what you do when you think no one is watching that defines who you are, after all.

Be the good that triumphs over evil. Be the person that others want to emulate. Be the victorious in a world where the enemy wants you to be the defeated.

Be the good that you know is inside you.

Because good always always always triumphs over evil.

*******************

" I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in a while, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear of just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

  4. Love this post Sel. Your tweet rings SO true. I'm going to have to go favorite it. I'm always trying to do my part to make people happy and feel like they do live in a good world. With all the bad that's going on, it's easy to feel defeated. But, for the kids - we have to make sure they know there's still good left! xoxox

  5. absolutely love this post. and that tweet.

bad things are never going to stop happening. let's be honest, it will only get worse. but i'm bound and determined to make my kid someone that loves. and loves hard. that even when the world is nasty and cruel, she sheds some light because that's what she's here to do. sometimes that's the best medicine.
